Aleksander Dahle - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

The Sesame Ring

The Sesame Ring helps open the doors of mass transit, functioning like a subway card at any subway system equipped with RFID readers.

Where can you buy it?

-          The product is still under development, but should be available in the end of this year.

Product information and videos:

Relative Advantage:

This product will make it easy and effectively for you to enter through doors and gates. Instead of using regular access cards that you have to put in your pocket afterwards, you could just keep the ring on your finger. For example, if you are carrying a lot of shopping bags, you’ll avoid fumbling with keys or wallets while you’re passing through a gate or trying to open your door back home. Additionally, the product is waterproof which is another thing to not worry about. You can also customize it and make it “yours”.

Complexity:

Using this product should be as easy as a regular access card. If you are using this on the subway or metro, you will just have to pay as you go. You just have to add value to the ring and pay just like another transit card.

Trialability:

Due to relatively low complexity it should not be hard to test.

Observability:

Since it is a colored ring, I think people will notice it quite fast when you are passing through the metro. This product has the potential to become a trend. It can also be used as an accessory to your outfit, which could make it fashionable.

Compatibility:

In big cities that have well-developed infrastructure with wide collective offers this product could definitely be a hit. I think the need of efficiency in collective transport is essential that people leave their cars at home.

Adaptability:

I think this product could quickly become a trend among people of all ages. It is easy to use and can become a “must have” for frequent users, especially students and people that do not have a car available.

Conclusion:

This product is very useful and offers a new dimension to the market. It is cool that you can pass with a simply fist bump and don’t have to worry about keeping it dry. If you don’t use it you can just attach it to your keychain. I think this product will be adopted and that we will see products like this very soon.

Daniel Kulsvehagen - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

Sleep Safe Tape

Tired? Need a nap? In class? At a meeting? Sleep safe tape is what you need!

Relative advantage:

The Sleep Safe Tape gives you the opportunity to sleep anywhere while it still looks like your eyes are open. The tape cost $5.95 and is thus a pretty cheap product. The product does hold an advantage to painting on ones eyelids as you never know when you will become sleepy.

Complexity:

The product is seems easy enough to use. The hard part would be to tape the eyes straight to make it look as real as possible.

Trialability:

The product is cheap as it is so to try it beforehand seems rather unnecessary. With paint you could come close to trying out the effect of the product, but the product itself cannot be tried without being bought.

Observability:

This one is pretty easy. Either you get caught, or you dont. You pretty much only need to try this product once to find out if it works or not.

Compatability:

The product shows low compatability in any situation other than for fun. If you need sleep while in class, just don't come to class. The same goes for a business meeting. Although, that girl that just won't stop talking could become boring after a while.

Adaptability:

The adaptability of the Sleep Safe Tape is next to none. They can be used on other bodyparts, but there really is no reason to use it other than on ones eyelids.

Conclusion:

I believe that the Sleep Safe Tape could be used in a funny setting and that people might buy the product for that purpose. However the product shows low adaptability and compatability. Though the complexity of the product is fairly low, I don't think that this product will be adapted at a high rate.

The product could be improved by making different eyecolors and maybe a more detailed eye. All in all, the Sleep Safe Tape is a product to use for fun, and nothing else. It can be used for fun because of the low price.

The Smart Finder

How many times have you been in a hurry, but for some reason you cant find either your keys or your wallet when you are about to leave?

It happens to all of us, and usually when you really cant afford it.

With this awesome little gadget you can press a button on the console, and the keychain will make a loud sound.

Problem solved and off to work you go!

Relative advantage:

In every household there are different key chains on the keysets so you know which keys are yours.

However this genius little gadget doesn’t just come in four colors, it also has beeping device for easy localization of your keys. It is also possible to mount it to your phone or remote-controller. It`s incredible sensor works up to 30 meters from the source.

Complexity:

This innovation is easy to use. It has colors so even your children are able to use it. Mount the gadget to your keychain, and you are ready to go.

Compability:

As it can be mounted to almost all surfaces, everybody can find this item useful. The only people who it probably is not suited for are people who are neat.

Trialability:

This product can easily be tried/demonstrated for everyone, but not so easy giving away samples, as this is the whole product.

Observability:

The purpose of this product is easily observable by others. If you are messy, this product will easily fit your needs.

Adaptability:

The purpose of this item is to locate things you have temporarily lost in your house or in your car. It is specialist technology and is designed for one purpose only.

Will it be adopted?

This product is very useful and many people are in need of it. However I can`t see the urgent need for it every day, but once in a while when you really are in a hurry and can`t locate your things. It is not an expensive product, and comes as a family package with 4 units.
If I think everyone will adopt this product? No, but the segment for this product are people who are messy and usually late for appointments.

Jørgen Daae - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

Laser Guided Scissors

Where to purchase the product?

1.      Relative Advantage
The only way that these scissors are different from regular scissors, are the lasers that are supposed to help you cut straighter. The scissors are also able to cut through fabrics; most store bought scissors (cheaper scissors) are not able to do so.

2.      Complexity
Scissors are not complex items to use. The only problem I see is that it might be a bit difficult for left handed people to use these scissors.

3.      Observability
It depends where the product is used. For example if the product was used by a barber I think people would react to it, some might react positively while others would react negatively. Other places could be at home or at the office, where friends and colleagues would see this product.

4.      Compatibility
The scissors are supposed to be able to use on paper and fabrics, however people that use scissors to cut fabrics know that you need scissors designed to cut through the fabrics.

5.      Adaptability
I’m not convinced that people would buy these for their sole purpose which is to help people cut straighter. The reason why is that if you have shaky hands you’ll have a shaky line. There is only one group of people I believe would adapt this product and that is a group of people that are usually known as “nerds”. They wouldn’t buy it for the precision cutting, but because it has a laser.

Simen Lossius Ellefsen - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

Fork Chops

Relative Advantage: This product, in contrast to regular chopsticks, has both the chops and a fork. This creates an advantages due to the complexity of the regular chopsticks - which from my perspective is hard to use. The performance is improved through the additional dimension you get with a fork on the product.

Complexity: As I mentioned above, the fork chops are much easier to use, which should not impede the implementation of the product. It is not difficult to understand the function of the technology.

Trialability: This product should not be hard to test due to the low complexity.

Observability: There may be a visible result in the way you consume your food more rapidly – e.g, you are eating sushi and the pieces fall apart; here you are - “fork chops”.

Compatibility: There could be a problem to implement this innovation in the asian culture – chopsticks are a part of the conventional dining set there. However, in the western part of the world the fork chops could be adapted without further problems.

Adaptability: The fork chops have multiple uses – you can use it as a fork or as chopsticks. So if you run out of forks, you can use your fork chops.

Conclusion: It may not be the most revolutionary product on the market, but it offers a new dimension to the old chopsticks. Although, I don´t believe that this product will be adopted.

Jan Erik Buaroey - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

Bacon flavored toothpicks

Have you ever received the terrible message from your dentist saying that you have to stop hiding small pieces of bacon between your teeth just to keep the taste a little bit longer? Or is your dentist preaching about oral hygiene  while you lie down in the dentist's chair, as it was a religion? Bacon flavored toothpicks might be something for you!

Or maybe not?

Relative advantage
The question is whether the bacon flavored toothpicks will provide an advantage to the consumers, compared to regular toothpicks. First of all, the design looks pretty much the same as the toothpicks most of us have used several times in the past. The practical use of this product will therefore not give you any relative advantage to the regular toothpick.

The only two things that seem to seperate these toothpicks from the regular ones are the smell and the taste. The main purpose of the toothpick does not get affected by an improved(?) smell or taste. If the bacon taste of this toothpick is really good, which I for some reason highly doubt, it could give a relative advantage to a person that really loves bacon. The disadvantage though, is that the smell could be offensive to someone who does not like the smell of bacon, and also certain religious groups.

Complexity
How to use a toothpick is not a complex thing, and I believe most of us have used a toothpick before. Since this invention has the same design and main purpose as a current product, the complexity is equal to that of a regular toothpick.

Trialability
Due to the low complexity, trying it will not be hard. But the bacon flavored toothpicks will probably not be sold on every corner, and it is still only available on the Internet as far as I know. There might be some exceptions, of course. The toothpicks will probably not be a very visible product in stores.

Observability
This is probably not a product people walk around showing off to everybody. First of all it looks like a regular toothpick, so you would not really know that a person uses it (unless you can smell it). This means that you will probably never get anyone asking you what you are picking your teeth with. Secondly you will probably carry the case in your pocket, purse or backpack. The observability will of course improve if this is a product you would want to show off.

Compatibility
This product is definitely more compatible in some areas of the world than others taking religious aspects into consideration. I highly doubt that the bacon flavored toothpick will even be considered in conservative islamic nations and societies, but it might be very compatible with western steakhouses, and some other bars and restaurants. Maybe it will be a hit on your next barbeque party?

Adaptability
Some would probably argue that a toothpick is a toothpick, and more of a specialist tool. To a certain extent I can agree with that. But in some areas toothpicks can be a fashionable thing, as a part of an earring or a necklace. Toothpicks have also been known to be a tool to pierce yourself at home (probably not a good idea) or build models (a better idea). Someone actually built a replica of some of the tallest and most famous buildings and structures in the world using toothpicks (see picture here). There are probably many other possible uses for toothpicks as well. In that sense toothpicks are more of a generalist tool.

The things mentioned above could also have been done with bacon flavored toothpicks, although it would probably be a bad idea to build a bacon smelling replica of a building or a structure if you have a cat or a dog in your house. I will argue that regular toothpicks are better suited for other uses than what it originally was designed for, than what bacon flavored toothpicks are.

So, what other uses are there for a bacon flavored toothpick, besides the most obvious one (to actually use it as a toothpick)? The first thing that comes to my mind are people that want to quit smoking. A flavored toothpick to put in their mouth might work for some people to get rid of the habit.

Conclusion - Will the bacon flavored toothpicks be adopted?
If you really like bacon, these toothpicks might seem like a bargain at $4.95 for a case of 80 toothpicks, but my guess is that this product is more of a joke than a serious attempt to invent the next big thing in oral hygiene.

Even though the complexity of a bacon flavored toothpick is low (but not lower than a regular toothpick), it does not seem to have enough relative advantage compared to regular toothpicks and the observability also seems to be low. The product is definitely compatible some places, but I can't see the big market for bacon flavored toothpicks out there. When it comes to adaptibility, the only thing I can think of is that it might also be used by some people that want to quit smoking, but I don't see that as a big and promising market either.

Based on my analyzis I don't think this product will be adopted in a large scale, and whatever adoption that will take place will probably be slow.

If I were to propose one thing to improve the product, it would be to expand in terms of flavors. There are really not much more to do to this kind of product (maybe except starting to make regular toothpicks instead?). I highly doubt that the bacon flavor is very accurate, and a broader taste span might bring in some potential new customers and increase adoption. Maybe a sweeter taste is more suitable when you pick your teeth after dinner?

Texting Gloves - Touch Screen Phone Smart Gloves For iPhone, Android & Other Touch Screen Devices” $3.99

http://www.amazon.com/Texting-Gloves-Screen-Android-Devices/dp/B004FOHNT8

1.     Relative advantage
These gloves are the same design as most other gloves. They are designed to keep you warm, but they also have an extra feature: they are smartphone friendly. During cold winters in Norway I have to take off and on my gloves to text friends which is really annoying. My other option is to use Siri, but she doesn’t understand Norwegian so my friends get confused when I text them in English, and I struggle a lot to pronounce Norwegian names in ways so Siri understands. The gloves are cheap, so that makes me question whether or not they are good quality, but at the same time I would buy them and if they don’t work its not a huge loss, so the price is not an obstacle for adopters. So all in all, I would say that these gloves do have a relative advantage over regular gloves on the market.

2.     Complexity
Its gloves, you just put them on your hands. Most people (living in cold areas) have done it before, and if you haven’t its not very difficult to understand and use. So this innovation is not very complex.

3.     Compability
The gloves would of course not be needed in societies who doesn’t have cold weather, but in f. ex. Norway they are definitely needed. The only problem I can see is that the design is very plain and grey, but the design of the gloves is something that the producer easily could change.

4.     Trialability
The gloves can easily be tried by anyone.

5.     Observability
The results are easily observable, if the gloves work on a smartphone, the results are clear, they work.

6.     Adaptability
The gloves are made for one purpose, making it possible for you stay warm on your hands while using your smartphone. They could make different designs for them so that people could buy the ones they feel that would fit their personality. When you are not using your phone, they work as regular gloves. But I don’t think these gloves could easily be re-invented to some other purpose (although I could use them on my ipad, and not just my phone).

Will it be adopted?
I want these gloves. People are using their smartphones all the time these days. In cold weather it’s a pain in the a**  (or actually your hands) to go online to check when the next bus is coming or answer a “urgent” text, you’re freezing your hands off. This I believe is not just a problem for me, but also for other smartphone-users living in cold areas. After doing some research, I see that there are several “smartphone friendly gloves” for sale on pages such as ebay.com or amazon.com, so you can find a variety of different gloves, in different styles and from different brands, you can get expensive ones from f.ex North Face which might have better quality and do better in really cold weather, and you find really cheap ones such as the ones I found. I would say that this is an innovation that will be adopted by people (in cold places), but perhaps mostly by young people who desperately need to check their facebook every second minute. I don’t believe that people such as my father would feel the need for them since he only checks his phone about twice a day.

My friend just told me that in the store she works at in Norway, they are already selling a lot of riding gloves which are smartphone friendly, so I would argue that the adoption of this innovation in fact already has started.

Potato chip & popcorn grabber

Description:
The potato chip and popcorn grabber are ”hands” meant to help you in the difficult task of eating potato chips and popcorn respectively. With using the button to control the fingers and then pick up your snack, you avoid greasy fingers.

Where can you buy the product?

Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmFf7EukMds&feature=player_embedded

Will the product be adopted?

The potato chip and popcorn grabber will probably do what it is meant for; pick up the snack so you don´t get greasy fingers. A key question is whether there is a need and thus a market for this innovation. I don´t think so, but we have to look deeper into some aspects before making statements.

Relative advantage: Everybody has experienced greasy fingers while eating snacks, which the product prevents. It is not superseding any substitute products; the market is “open”. I think the price (US $35) is too high for the willingness to pay in the market, the product don´t give you extra status.

Compatibility: There are no needs of potential adopters, maybe someone will be it just for fun.

Adaptability: The possibility to modify the product to suit new uses/needs is limited. An alternative way to use the grabber is to pick up something dirty without be in contact with your hands. It can also be used to scratch you on the back.

Observability: The grabbers will most likely not be exposed to large crowds. The use area will be in small social gatherings enjoying snacks, limiting the observability.

Based on the research above, I don´t think the product – potato chip and popcorn grabber – will be adopted.

P.S.: I would like to have a grabber when eating Cheez Doodles!

Oerjan Moy - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

ASSIGNMENT # 2: WILL THE TOILET – TOOTH BRUSH BE ADOPTED?

By Oerjan Moy

“This product is a toilet brush shaped ass a toothbrush. Many are tired of the same old toilet brush. Now you can make it more fun to wash your toilet, or you can come closer to your evil dream to brush the toilet with yours enemy toothbrush.” The toilet (tooth) brush is made from plastic and is 41 centimeter long and 5 centimeter wide.

I don’t think it will be adopted at a high scale. It seems that this product is more for fun, and not for the advantages that’s coming with it. Out from the pictures it seems difficult to wash under the toilet edge.

The Toilet Tooth brush has not relative advantages compared with the original toilet brush, beside to give the toilet guests a good laugh.

I think the compatibility is low. I don’t many have ever thought of to design a toilet brush into a toothbrush. I think many thinks it is to strange and not advantageous enough.

The adaptability: if this product never goes on to be a success it’s possible to try to sell it to different zoos with big animals like elephants, rhinos, alligators etc.

I have never tested this product, so I’m not sure of the result, but if the result is amazing, something I doubt the chances is bigger than more people want to adopt it.

My own suggestion to improvement that could lead to a higher adoption rate:

  • Longer brushes on the edge of the brushes such as it possible to get under the toilet edge.
  • Make an elastic “neck” to the brush. This will also help together with the longer brushes to get under the toilet edge.
  • Different colors will give the customer more choices to choose one brush that will match the customer’s bath. Now the toilet – toothbrush comes in green and black.
